GRONINGEN CORPS DE GARDE |
Besides being housed in one of the oldest monuments in the north of the country, the Auberge mainly stands out by a combination of informal hospitality and guaranteed quality.
This characteristic building on a canal was built in 1634 to house town guards. Recesses for the bronze canons in several rooms still remind one of the days when soldiers guarded the entrance gate to the old town. During the past centuries the "Kortegaard', as the local population call the building, had a wide variety of uses; from a fraternity house to a graphics museum.
Following the thorough renovation in 1991, the Auberge acquired its current appearance in 1996 with the purchase of the adjoining monument. The subsequent alteration led to an increase of the number of rooms to twenty four. The relaxed atmosphere and characteristic charm have of course been retained.
